Well it was better to be honest about it now than to have them yelling and fussing about him later. He could at least say he was honest about it and didn't exactly try to hide the fact from them. The good guys were in that point of the movie where they started losing just to build up the drama for their eventual win. Even the bad guys needed their moment to shine right? Really, if the question of marriage ever came up he'd probably avoid it for a while because he'd been close to that once before and the person disappeared on him.
